I think it is safe to say that most of us have heard about the solar eclipse that is occurring on Aug 21st, 2017, and if you haven’t – trust me, you will soon. This may be the only time in our lives that we will see the moon pass in front of the sun leading to a total solar eclipse. With that said, it is absolutely crucial to wear proper eye protection while viewing the eclipse, as standard sunglasses will not be sufficient. The moon will pass between the sun and earth and cast a shadow over earth known as Umbra which can double as a sweet pet name in case you’re in the market for one. If you are one of the lucky ones who will be in the path of totality, then for exactly 2min and 40sec there will be a total solar eclipse, in other words, darkness in the middle of the day.
However, if you’re not in the path of totality, don’t cry just yet, you will at least experience a partial solar eclipse. Standard sunglasses are great for everyday use and look smoking hot, but they are not meant to protect your eyes while staring at the sun. If too many harmful light rays pass through, you can actually damage your macula which is responsible for the central part of your vision. This condition is called Solar Retinopathy (cue dramatic music).
eclipse glasses here is my public service announcement: If you plan to view the solar eclipse, get your hands on a pair of ISO 12312-2 solar eclipse glasses, a moon-themed T-shirt and a Bud-light so you can safely enjoy the largest shadow ever. We also carry them in our office and will gladly give them to you – at no charge! They will block 99.99968% of UV rays. Oh and of course, do NOT use binoculars as they magnify the sunrays entering your eyes, we wouldn’t want that now…. would we? No.
